Amatuer OWS pace: out front, no drafting w/GPS (in cap)
I am curious about how fast is fast and even realistic. Outside of events, featuring throngs of swimmers (current and short /long courses) what is an actual hot pace?
Owen, my neighbour, who has never lost a race that I know of, swims at just over a ~ 4 km/h 1:30/100M pace.
My son Logan (13yo) who won the 500M race here, also punted that at the same pace 1:30/100M. His pool 400M time is 5:15
So 6min/400 that is ~ 60min 4K time, mile in 24mins. IDK in my books that is tough work.
As an amatuer, might be able to shave a bit off that. But I think from the 4 km/h speed onward, gains are near impossible, for a 65 yo, even with huge investments in meds & training.
Just have to consult the drag formula to see the reasoning ie Drag = V**2
Olympic pace is > 5 km/h or ~ 5min/400M over a 10K! Ouch

Bottom line is, it depends who else is in the race! I think all you can really do is set your next target pace based on where you are at the moment and what you think is realistic. Then, when you achieve that, you set the next target. Also, pace will vary significantly depending on distance.
It's hard to tell from the events I enter (because they are all open-water, and some are current-assisted) but I think most of the top 5% would be able to swim 1500m in 20 minutes or less, i.e. a CSS pace of 1:20/100m. Some are significantly faster!
I've recently swum a pool 1500m in 27:27 (non-wetsuit) and 25:46 (wetsuit); I generally come roughly halfway in amateur events (though I've been as high as the top third and as low as the bottom third, depending on who else was swimming).

Our coach was recommending us that not to participate in any race if we cant swim the below simple times:
1500m sub 20 min
400m sub 5 min
100m sub 1min
These were not for young swimmers, for those between the 20-60 ages amateur swimmers.

I guess it depends on the race. Those times are for serious contenders; however, in amateur races, most are only economically feasible with large numbers of participants (unless the serious guys want to pay serious money to enter!).
Most of the events I enter will have a handful of sub-20 minute 1500m swimmers, but just as many in the 30+ minute range (even up to 40 minutes!). If it's a big event (say 200+ swimmers) it will usually have different starting groups, based on ability, and identified by different coloured swim caps. I'm usually in the medium-speed group (25-30 minute/1500m).

There mustnt be more than 50% difference between an olympian and an amateur swimmer in any case and in any event, if there is then no need to participate in any race.
Ussein Bolt cant run the 100m 50% faster than me. Same for the swimming, if olypians swimthe 1500m then we should at least swim 22.5 min (15*1.5 min).
Being amateur swimmer is also not easy. Who says thay we are amateurs? Maybe we are even not swimmers just the bathers.
We must train insane or remain the same.

OWS 3000M 55-59 Top Canadian Triathlete
67. LECKY, Oliver 55 Technosport Swim Tri 1:18:29.20 50 CAN
I gather those are pool times SC. But the below times would slaughter the field in a triathlon race. It will also probably win or for sure podium on OW racing around Vancouver. Racing is good for you so depends on what your goals are. I wouldn't recommend showing up at your first race, having trained your entire life to meet the standard!:
