Where My swimming journey started
Just been looking at my first posts on swimsmooth forum and still not quite hit my goal I set back then but 75m non stop was such a struggle. Probably impossible for lots of people to grasp how hard most of the people I swim with swam well as children and when they come back to it later in life the improvement is lightning quick.

Starting late in your 5th decade is a massive effort.
How good is it to be able to go to any pool and start cutting laps.

What kind of things did you try when you began?

Initially I bought the TI book and liked the way it explained about reducing drag and body shape etc.
I worked with that for about 18 months before taking my first ever swimming lesson in 2011 with a TI coach Ian Smith now sadly deceased. I had got myself able to swim but hadn't really understood what the drills were showing me so I wouldn't recommend a book or a DVD to anyone as a starting point. Straight to a coach would be my advice and it's unlikely there's one good enough at a local pool.

I also went through my old posts to take stock of my swim journey over the years. To summarise:
2010: Took up swimming for health reasons, after 20 years of never visiting a pool. Almost collapsed after first swim - 12 lengths of breaststroke!
2011: Discovered Mr Smooth. Joined the SwimSmooth forum. Bought the DVD box set. Started re-learning freestyle.
2012: Bought Catch Masterclass DVD. Switched to 2-beat kick. Swam first continuous 100m freestyle in February. First mile in November.
2014: Bought a wetsuit. First open water event: 750m reservoir swim. (Also did a sprint triathlon, but never got to swim because of sea conditions!)
2015: Video analysis. 2.5k sea swim (nearly quit due to unilateral breathing into the chop); 2.7k river swim; 5k pool swim.
2016: Worked on bilateral breathing. Swam the River Dart 10k, and several other open water events.
I should add, in the first 6 months after taking up swimming and making dietary changes, I lost nearly 2 stone in weight and got my cholesterol ratio down from 7.5 to 3.2 - and BMI and cholesterol have remained in control ever since.

Re: Where My swimming journey started
Thats looking pretty good and different to TI.
Looks like his support point lies under his shoulders instead of more at the front.
My take on Sea walker technique is that he saves the shoulders by not applying much force at the front of the stroke, but shifts the force more to the mid and endphase.
Because the hips should lead the pull, shifting power to the back also requires the hips to rotate a bit more at the end. Ti has more power at the front.
Next time, when you see him, can you ask what he thinks is the difference between his stroke and the TI stroke?
Getting under 2 min shouldnt take much fittness if technique is ok. If you are very stiff with bad natural balance and buioyancy it could take more effort to overcome these disadvantages.

People often ask him on Facebook If I was him I'd be fed up with people asking . But he's a great guy and always polite. He usually answers something like It's different mechanics or They both agree rotation is necessary but the timing is different.
I can get 10 x 100under 2mins now but working on longer distances. I combine Adams Drills with swim smooth training philophosy. Both would probably say it the wrong way but both my times and effort required arrived coming down this way.

Adam was asked on this Facebook thread on OSS group earlier this month it's in his reply to David Westbury https://www.facebook.com/groups/outdoorswimmingsociety/permalink/10154365458442830/
Some glimpses of Adam from his website video about swim-camp info https://youtu.be/fA4pB_dHNcI

Re: Where My swimming journey started
A good starting point would be in 1998 when we visited the East Coast of Australia and decided that we would like to snorkel on the Great Barrier Reef. Mrs Cott couldn't swim at all and needed urgent training for the following year's planned visit to Cairns.
I started to teach her breastroke as I could swim B/S at 50% pace of elite swimmers of my age group which I though was quite good for self taught.
July 1998 she did her first breastroke with forward movement! Somehow I came across Laughlins T.I book and after many unsuccesful attempts gave up on that. Other books were used and slowly our self taught efforts worked.
Fast forward to me doing the Cottesloe Classic Mile in Jan 2011, 2012 & 2013 and four other sea/river swims in Perth.
During this time my inspiration and encouragement came from the swim coach at our local pool in Claremont, Perth - Paul Newsome, later joined by Shelley Taylor-Smith - and of course the Swim Smooth Forum!

This is why I call myself a "Half-Olympian" - whether it's swimming, running or cycling, I do all of them at about half the speed of an Olympian!cottmiler wrote:I could swim B/S at 50% pace of elite swimmers
