Observing Paul Newsome,s squads in action at Claremont Pool over recent days shows up this.

He has three 50m lanes each holding 8 to 10 swimmers and the action is fast and furious.  Lane 1 pace is about 2 min/100m and Lane 3 is probably faster than 1:30.  

To casual observers like us, we see that all the swimmers are competent and often have a 6 beat kick.  This no doubt because schools here teach ocean swimming from nippers.

The difference between all three lanes is that the fastest lane swimmers paddle at 75 spm plus with all Swinger style stroke.  Most bilateral breathing.

I keep repeating  this in order to make my brain do this in the pool.  It needs a shorter stroke and fast breathing.  On Monday in the endless pool, it was suggested that I turn the head earlier to breathe (as per Go Swim) and this does seem to allow more air in.

Thanks for the sharing cottmiler. So mostly swingers breathing bilateral and with 6bk despite 75SPM+ could allow a 2bk, that's quite interesting. What about lane 2? Same technique just at slower stroke rate?

The debate between bilateral vs one side breathing seems neverending. Some coaches recommend bilateral, some don't. I went from breathing every 3 strokes to every 2, switching side every length. On one hand I got more air, but I guess I also introduced some bad habits over time (despite switching breathing side every length). Now I'm trying to clean up my stroke with the help of a front snorkel, but I'm also tempted to revert to breathing bilaterally (eg every 3 or twice left twice right).

Hey cottmiler, maybe it's a silly question: I was thinking to these many fast swingers going back and fort in their lane. I suppose most of them had a straight arm recovery swinging wide to the side (not high as a sprinter). Didn't they hit each other with their wide swinging arms?

When I share the lane with other swimmers and experiment a bit with a straighter arm, I always have to be careful and bend the arm every time a swimmer comes from the opposite side in order not to hit him (same problem when swimming fly). It's a bit annoying.

Has anyone the same problem?

yeah, I also only try totally straight arms in a wide quit lane, which rarely is available.
Its als an option to try straight arm but recovering more over the top with more shoulder roll.<
Started this recently to stretch the upperbody some  more and to make sure I finish the stroke completely.

I wonder how classical long strokers will feel in Pauls pool.

The lanes are quite wide for a start. Secondly these people are very familiar with open water racing in packs and around buouys.

Admittedly, the other day, one of them cracked my arm from the next lane , going in opposite direction.
