Another Wonderful Day in the Sea! Empty Another Wonderful Day in the Sea!

It,s been difficult to restrain myself from reporting the wonderful feeling that sea swimming in perky conditions has been during our few weeks in Perth.

Today was very windy with big waves and “white horses” and to make forward progress in the washing machine needed big wide arm actions and attention to keeping the feet close together.

It makes swimming in a pool seem like Micky Mouse and the challenge will be how to replicate things discovered while sea swimming.

Sighting is ideally needed on every stroke but the waves were too big to do it. More practise needed.

In a half hearted attempt at “training” for the Cottesloe Classic Mile, I have been swimming every day in the sea. In previous years I have done about five pool sessions for every one sea session. Not sensible really.

Unfortunately the water temperature has limited the amount of exposure time in the sea water as indicated in this article:

http://www.myweather2.com/swimming-and-water-temp-index.aspx

I,m like a UK tourist who goes for a week to Austria to Ski once a year, totally unfit and untrained for the conditions. Result is often a return flight carrying extra plastercast adornments.

However today the water must have been above 22 degC which enabled me to last about 20 mins and then want to go in again somewhat later. Hopefully the water temperature is improving.

Next week we hope to visit Coogee Beach to swim in the shark netted area. Mrs Cott is recovering from a cut foot from swimming in the river and treading on something sharp. This has slowed us down somewhat.

That's a very conservative temperature chart, obviously not aimed at the "acclimatised" swimmer. Some people can, and do, swim a mile and more at 5 degrees C and lower in nothing but trunks and swim cap. However, it would be extremely foolish to attempt this without prior conditioning, and I don't think anyone ever really enjoys the experience!

I'm relatively intolerant of cold water, yet I've swum 25-odd minutes in 16 degree seawater sans-wetsuit without any problem. On the other hand, in the same temperature with a full wetsuit I've suffered mild hypothermia after two and a half hours of swimming.

The key factors really are conditioning and recovery. Conditioning is just a case of getting enough regular exposure to grow the necessary sub-cutaneous fat (some call it "bioprene"!). Recovery is a matter of getting dry and wrapped up as quickly as possible, and not trying to raise the body temperature too quickly - and certainly not from the outside in (no hot showers).

After a paddle in a quiet sea this morning we went to the river.

The purpose was to remind ourselves how to swim with fins. It,s been several years since we had to use them with Paul Newsome and Shelley Taylor-Smith.

Our experience then was shear pain from cramp. However, today Mrs Cott did a bit but reported it was heavy on the legs but no cramp.

I managed happily to do a kilometer with no pain! This was absolutely wonderful and I could practise a bit of 6-1-6 and generally get the two beat kick and arm timing right. The arm action was better when I led the elbow forward higher before entry. Like finger tip drill.

You might wonder why my ankles are suddenly so amenable to fins and it,s because I do pushups on the fronts of the feet, as in yoga Cobra Drill.

Two old cottesloe surf club members walking up the beach after their Sunday race:

“How was the water mate?”

“Sensational!” says the other.

Indeed it was. Air 38degC today, water 22.8.

Our swimming strokes have improved immensely, mainly because we have space to swing arms about more. In a narrow English swimming pool with lanes seemingly 1 m wide, we have to swim all cramped up.
