Unco with Paddles Empty Unco with Paddles

I was practicing Unco today and tried it with the Finis Freestyler paddle and also with the Finis Agility paddle.

Several years ago I was not very good at doing the full stroke with either of theses types of paddle.

I therefore was not too sure how well I would be able to do Unco. Any error in angle or force would throw the body off equilibrium and give trouble.

Much to my surprise I was able to cope nicely with the Agity but the Freestyler was even better!

With it on either hand, it really helped me get a lot of the underwater stroke correct and especially the back end push.

This bit where the wrist breaks back and yet can still push water back has eluded me with bare hands. It is very evident if one looks at Shelley Taylor-Smith.

Some people don't realise how similar Unco is to normal two arm swimming but bit by bit the two actions become closer together for me.

Feeling the right sort of pressure on the Freestyler paddle throughout the entire stroke, on either side, is a very welcome experience!

This is what proper swimming must feel like!

It needs some nifty body twisting or flipping as zenturtle says but I am even able to "chuck a bucket of water out the back" as I mentioned on the SwimSmooth forum.
