One Arm Drills - Slow but Full Speed
After the first migraine inducing 15 seconds we get a lovely view of some one arm drills supposedly for a beginner. But it is full speed not slow motion.

Overlooking the fact this is not a beginner at all, the hypnotic glide and arm action is something to aim at as a drill.
In my pool lane today were two gents and a young female noisily churning the water as they thrashed their way through the syrup.
I was working on my one arm drill variations and was easily faster and expending very little effort.
I'm not sure beginners can really master this early on. It would have saved me millions of hours practising struggle.
If you think about it, one shouldn't ever be fighting the water in a still water pool. If you are then something is wrong with your action or body balance. However, in the sea you will need to "struggle" and you will need all your stretch cord developed muscle and all round swimming skills because you are fighting the water.
As Terry Laughlin says "don't practise struggle". It took him over 20 years to learn that himself.

Note this: There is no effortless swimming like TI claims! To become effortless requires maximum struggle and maximum effort, this is the rule of swimming, elite swimmers train in this fashion. TI = Trash Item.
Can Terry swim at least an easy, basic and the most fundamental set like 10*100m on 1:30(all sub 1:20) with his effortless TI technique? If he cant, (actaully he cant) , dont mind what he is saying, you cant learn swimming from a land turtle
Indeed, i havent seen any benefits of neither TI not Terry's advices, so that left his forum and stopped reading his articles. Cotty, be sure that you are more experinced and a better swimmer than him. In my point of view, he can be a good American marketer, but definitely not a swimmer, he needs 20 more years to learn swimming

I am not so impressed with Terrys swim technique. His balance is not great and he has very stiff shoulders (and ankles etc).
His best asset is his recovery, breathing and pretty smooth non TI like timing usually.
The whole effortless swimming thing has 2 sides that can be rather personal.
Its true a lot of people need to slow down to have enough time to feel what they are doing and how it effects balance etc.
If I only trash I always fall into the same ingrained faults and its almost impossible to fix them while swimming hard and long.
I have to overwrite these natural movements with other ones swimming slowly or swimming fast, but relatively fresh and short (USRPT style).
But when looking at guys who used to swim as kids on a swim club its always obvious how hard these guys work in the water.
There is nothing effortless about the amount of effort they put in their workout. They are very hard workers!
And they swim fast, even with little (or bigger) stroke flaws.
At the same time there are a lot of females who have been swimming as a child, judging their technique (butterfly, flipturn), but they are not fast although their stroke looks OK.
They simply dont release many Watts to the water.
You simply have to swim with proper technique and you have to swim hard.
