Is hand entry and underwater arm action different for polo compared to normal stroke?

I don't know if it *should* be, but it is when I do it! It's pretty much inevitable because of the different angle at the shoulder when the arm enters the water (on account of the upper trunk being less horizontal).

conclusion: there are many differnt ways to swim waterpolo.
some have lot of extension and swim like normal freestyle, some have the real waterpolo short stroke for holding the ball between the arms.
You are pressing about 4 kg of extra water down compared to normal freestyle, so in that detailed sense, they are not comparable.
Found this short stroke version of elite level arm mechanics interesting.

hardly any differnce with the normal swimming.
Dont know if that also applies to Sun Yangs style

Re: Arm Action doing Heads Up/Polo
The last but one video of your post SA is One Arm Polo. It is not good enough to only do two arm polo.
I was doing one arm polo the other day because the left arm was deficient.
Lack of muscle in that arm compared to the right arm. It needs correcting.

Re: Arm Action doing Heads Up/Polo
It looks like no one else is interested in the difference between heads up and normal stroke.
This video, for what it,s worth says you do the same! Nightcrawler got there first.

Re: Arm Action doing Heads Up/Polo
I have the same stroke mechanics but just my cadance(also as in the above videos) is higher while doing water polo(tarzan) drill:

Re: Arm Action doing Heads Up/Polo
Question: if you feel your pull is exactly the same doing water polo drill as swimming normal freestyle, are you saying your trunk is in the same position?
I suppose ideally, we would like the only difference to be our head/neck, with the rest of the torso as it is for normal freestyle - but for me, I think raising the head does lower the hips and take the trunk as a whole slightly out of the horizontal plane. This means my shoulder articulation is different when the hand enters. I think also the "head up" position tends to reduce body rotation - and the arm recovery becomes more "swinger" style.

Re: Arm Action doing Heads Up/Polo
It depends on your normal stroke.
If that one is very long, swimming like Mat Giles feels pretty different.
Marleen Veldhuis started as a water polo player before becoming 50-200 m sprinter. She said it took some time to change from her little short waterpolo stroke to a standard competetive swimstroke.
For a high rev open water swimmer the difference is smaller.
If you only look at with of entry and having high elbows, yeah, they are about the same.

Re: Arm Action doing Heads Up/Polo
????
So , you can float. Whats the point you want to make?
Try it with 1 kg weight on your ankles and see if you still can float level The leg sinker challenge...
Have you seen how short and skinny Gianiottis legs are? Same with Paltrinieri.(mostly skinny in his case I believe)
Same with Shinji, plus his ape index +4 inch. All no kickers.
