Adam Walker and ice mile

Post by Guest on Wed Feb 15, 2017 10:45 pm

The ocean walker stroke holds together in the cold.
I had a lesson with Adam last week was brilliant. http://outdoorswimmer.com/event-reviews/event-report-the-5th-eastern-bay-invitational-ice-mile

25:26 at 4C is really impressive. Some claim you need to keep a high stroke rate to keep the body warm enough, this is not the case with Adam.

25:26 means 25:26 / 18 = 1:21 pace per 100m, not a good time even for a master swimmer. 4 degrees water makes not more than 3-4 seconds worse pace difference. His actual pace in a warmer water is around 1:18. In Marmaris Aquamasters we watched him, he hesitated to join the 6K race due to the better swimmers in his age group prefered to race in 1.5K race by looking at the participant list, very cunning Very Happy

Well, actually the distance was shorter (1600m, 4 laps of 400m) so the pace was 1:35/100m. However: 4C... most people can't even immerse hands or feet for more than few minutes at those temperatures, go figure swim a mile. Don't know if you ever tried to swim at 4C, I haven't. But cold water swimmers always remark how every degree below 10C makes a ton of difference and can also be dangerous in terms of hypothermia. Ice miles are not for everybody.

Well I think it's pretty amazing to even be able to finish even the guys who had to pull out on the last lap are amazing.
But I am saddened by you holding such negativity to a fellow swimmer Nightcrawler it does you no credit. You are an amazing swimmer yourself so I just feel sad you find it so easy to find fault.

I swam before in -10 degrees weather -2~3 degrees water in Bosphorus and my friends still swimming in winter at the same place. We were swimming half an hour in this water without hyphotermia, it happens after an hout then not at 25 minutes.
Here is a footage of my friends, some of them are still attending my swim clinic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Mm_GXnUfvY

Ice miles are for everybody if an amateur swimmer such as Adam could have done!

In order to be a sportsman one should give the below times:
- Personal best/current time of 4 strokes.
- Personal best/current time of favourite stroke and distance.
- Personal best/current freestyle current average pace in long distances.
- Personal best/current freestyle max speed for 50m and 100m.
I.E, while discussing about the performance of the car and paces in different gears, what are the gears(wattages) and the speed limits of the car in these gears?
The above values can make us understand the capability of a swimmer, give an idea about the swimmer.

We have known nothing about Adam, even couldnt have seen his underwater footage although he gave us a seminar, regarding his successes in the oceans 7, in our regular coaching meetings, he talked about the efficiency of his technique and showed his dolphins, showed us neither his pull technique nor discussed about his paces, no details...

Swimming the oceans's 7 or swimming in an ice water makes no sense for a sportsman, he can influence the people outside the or new to swimming but not the performance swimmers. For a real swimmer there is no difference between walking from Turkey to Italy and swimming the Oceans 7/and or crossing the Biritish channel by (lets say) 50.000 inefficient strokes which result in poor times, and also it is not joyful Very Happy

Wow at - 2to 3 c you should have been walking on it  even sea water freezes at -2c . The swimmers in the video braver than me but it wasn't as cold as an Ice mile that day Mr Google has it at 11 C if it was 31st Dec 2015. Still amazing I can brave 15 even 14 but anything below takes my breath away. But I am old ! And still sad you rubbish another's acheivements.

Hey woody, very handy link, I saved it in my bookmarks for my next ow swims! By chance do you know any web site that does the same with lakes temperature? seatemperature.info reports some lakes temperature as well but not all lakes.

Thanks,
Salvo

Cottmiler is travelling north towards Tenerife and England for arrival next week on 22nd Feb. On a cruise ship having been up the Missisipi and the Amazon.

Unfortunately we have had no proper internet and have only had one swim in Barbados. However we have been doing gym work in readiness for swimming and tennis.

I did get to see Paul Newsome,s blog about Harold Yick and his increase in cadence. A very useful piece of info.

Sorry but; are we talking about swimming or strength for cold water? If we are talking about cold water endurance , there are public in russia who are staying in ices.
Again I am repeating; if we are talking about swimming as a sport(pool or open water it does make no sense), we should give the below data:
1) Current/Personal best times for favourite distance (3K,5K,10L 20K etc)
2  Current/Personal best times for 50-100-200-400-800-1500m in the pools(SCM and LCM)
These two can give an idea of the swimmer's performance and level.

These is no difference from swimming in the north pole without any performance target and walking from Turkey to Italy in a snowy weather, both of them are not related with any kind of sport's discipline. These are just making show!

There are thousands of swimmers in Canada and in Russia swimming such a set below almost as an everyday routine easily:
40x100m on 1:15 (with 59" pace)
Do you guess that they dont know or cant dare to swim in the oceans or in the iced waters? Very Happy  Of course they can, but they dont do it, because such kind of shows are not for the elite athletes.

For an horrible amateur swimmer such like us swimming a 4x100m on 1:30 with sub 1:10 pace is 100.000 times valuable than swimming 100.000 kilometers with the Orcas in the North Pole. Very Happy

I had a great day at one of Adam Walker,s one day swim camps yesterday. It was a follow up camp in Nottingham with only 3 of us attending due to being Easter Sunday I guess.
It was great for the three of us getting so much individual coaching fromAdam. Over the full day we must have been in the water for close to six hours with Adam alongside us. He showed us , filmed us played it back then watched us try again .He can identifyboth the big and smallest movement s that get in the way of your Stroke. In my case my head position and tendency to kick behind my body line but more importantly working directly with me in the water to show me how to correct.
He isolated different points with the other two swimmers who equally were pleased with the day.
A fantastic Day and worth every penny

At a school pool just outside Nottingham . But he holds them at quite a few venues. Both indoor and open water this country and others. Just google Ocean Walker Swim Camps. It is what you have been looking for!

It's a bit pricey.

I am trying to pluck up courage to try Swim Therapy and have just written to them to enquire.

Of course will be pricey, those are not swimmers, they are marketers, Totally Waste of Time (TWT).
If you want real improvement, ask for lessons from a real swimmer such as Mark Foster, etc...

I contacted Mark Forster but he quoted £2000 per hour plus travel and hotel expenses.

He did however remind me that I bought a swim video from him in 1997 at Sheffield and that he had electronically monitored that I had studied this video year after year and that I should know all there is to know by now.

If you google "The Urban Dictionary" you will find most of the ever changing slang words in the "English" language.

Hi Cot
Just book a pool camp with Adam it's 190 ish you will then see he's a great swimmer and not a marketeer.
I am so sad Nightcrawler rubbishes so many people when he is our age he will realise he only damages his own well being.
But yet he is helpful in offering to critique your videos I'm bewildered !

If it continues I will just stop posting

woody: there was a chap at work of which someone said to me "You have to shift a ton of **** to get an ounce of gold".

It is annoying if we take comments personally but I just think what a wonderful journey I've had with SS and maybe this forum over the years and what I've learned and the super people that I have communed with and sometimes met in real life.

If you look at the T.I site, you will see these same thoughts echoed.

Rubbish for whom for what? Smile  I am swimming better and faster than 20 years ago and still improving slightly, hope i ll be swimming better and faster than this 10 year later...
Adam, SS and such marketeers will never make you faster swimmers, they are just making show business and by that illusion's excitement you are thinking that you learned something new and that will help you swim better. Believe me it will never gonna be, has never happened. Because;
1st:  swimming requires 1000+ practice for each movement, without doing this practice cant get even one step further.
2nd: if you want to be a boxer, you should train with a boxer, just going to a boxing course wont make you a boxer. In swimming it is the same, if you want to be a better swimmer, then you must swim with a squad full of with swimmers(or ex-national/olympic swimmers, etc). Buffoons like SS and Adam are neither swimmers nor real coaches.

If you want a rehabilitative swimming, then go to a pure TI course and swim for your back, neck, etc pains. Ex TI swimmers(who took 4-5 years private lessons from Matt Hudson) are attending my courses, they are taking the first 3 place in their age group now, that they had never dreamed about. Competitive swimming approach is different than rehabilitation.

Before adoring these marketeers I recommend you to read about "motor skill learning", then you will wake up from the hypnosis.

It is your choice of course. Very Happy
